American Red Cross Lifeguard & Water Safety Course

Dive into safety and leadership with our multi-day comprehensive American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard & Water Safety Course. Designed to equip you with life-saving skills, this hands-on program covers water rescue techniques, CPR, First Aid, and AED usage. Taught by certified instructors, the course ensures you’re ready to respond confidently in emergency situations. Upon successful completion, you’ll earn an official American Red Cross Certification. The students will be going to TWO different locations in order to obtain the Shallow Water, Deep Water, Water Park and Waterfront certifications.

Class 1: Tuesday 4PM – 9PM: Fairview Heights Rec Complex / 9950 Bunkum Rd, Fairview Heights, IL
Class 2: Friday 4PM – 9PM: SIUE Student Fitness Center / 35 Circle Dr, Edwardsville, IL
Class 3: Saturday 4PM – 9PM: Fairview Heights Rec Complex / 9950 Bunkum Rd, Fairview Heights, IL
Class 4: Sunday 4PM – 9PM: Fairview Heights Rec Complex / 9950 Bunkum Rd, Fairview Heights, IL
Red Cross lifeguarding students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class and pass a swimming skills test. This is American Red Cross requirements to even begin the class. If a student was to fail the swim test, the student can reschedule for any upcoming classes for a discounted fee of $150.
Prerequisite 1 – Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
1. Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
2. Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
3. Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2 – Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Please remember that the online portion of the course must be completed prior to the in-person sessions.
This online portion is quite intensive and can take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours to complete, so we recommend you begin as soon as possible to ensure you’re ready for the in-person sessions. The online portion needs to be done before the class start date. Please bring in confirmation of completion (screenshots are allowed) or you will not be permitted to attend the course and not issued a refund.
Course Policies
Low Enrollment
For any scheduled course (Prerequisite, Lifeguard New/Renewal, and Pool Operator) to run there must be a minimum of 6 participants attending. Therefore, To The Rescue CPR reserves the right to cancel any course that does not meet the minimum requirement. In the event a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, any student in that course will be able to transfer to the next available course free of additional charge.
Weather Cancellation
If a class is cancelled due to weather conditions any student in an affected course will be able to transfer to the next available course from additional charges.
Participant Cancellation
If a student cancels 2 weeks or more before the start day of the course the student will receive a full refund MINUS a $25.00 processing fee. If a student cancels less than 2 weeks before the start day of the course a refund will not be given, but you can apply your payment toward a future course with a $35.00 transfer fee, however, cancelation of class before 48 hours will result in no refund and unable to transfer to another class without full payment. If a student “No-Shows” to a course, a refund will not be given. Please review our No-Show Policy below for more details. Calling or emailing the facility (where the course is being held) to cancel is not the proper procedure to cancel and will not be honored for a refund to be issued. In order to cancel enrollment in a course please email totherescuecpr@gmail.com. You will need to provide your name, reliable phone number, and course information. Refunds, minus the $25.00 processing fee will either be credited to the original payment method, or (if the original payment were in cash) a check will be sent to your home address approximately 3-4 weeks after the cancellation was initiated.
Rescheduling A Course
If a student wishes to reschedule their course they must notify To The Rescue CPR a week prior to the start of the course. A transfer fee of $35.00 is due immediately to be rescheduled for another course. If you are rescheduling due to an emergency you will need to contact To The Rescue CPR, LLC before the start time and day of the course. Please be prepared to send a doctor’s note, family obituary or any other appropriate documentation to reschedule without a transfer fee. These will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Attendance Policies For Courses
Any student registered for a course must arrive on time and be present for the entire duration of the course. If a student arrives more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time of the course they may be denied entry to the course. All classes must be attended in its entirety. Tardiness and/or leaving early will not be allowed and result in forfeiture of fees and a no passing grade.
Failing Any Portion of a Course
If a student fails any skill requirement of the class, one retake of the entire class will be offered for a future course at a discounted rate of $150. Only one additional attempt will be provided. Failing to show (a NO SHOW) does not qualify.
No Show Policy
If a student “No-Shows” to a course, NO refund will be given. If a student shows up more than an hour late to a course, it is also considered a No Show. The student must pay for another course in full; To the Rescue CPR will not transfer the prior course payment to another course if a student No Shows. No exceptions will be made on this policy.
Lifeguarding Course Conduct Policy
To maintain a safe and professional learning environment, respectful behavior is required at all times. Disrespect toward another student or instructor, excessive phone use during class, distracting behavior, roughhousing in or out of the pool, or refusal to participate will not be tolerated. Any of these behaviors may result in immediate removal from the course without refund. The instructor reserves the right to make the final decision regarding dismissal for any reason, even those not listed above.
All participants are also required to follow all Fairview Heights Park and Recreation rules, SIUE rules and facility guidelines at all times.
Registration and Payment for any To The Rescue CPR class is considered acknowledgment and agreement to the above-mentioned policies and procedures.
